The More You Look, the More There Is

There is a fear that knowledge ruins things.
That if you learn the name of a bird, something of its wildness disappears. That if you understand how a storm forms, the sky becomes less frightening and therefore less beautiful. That wonder and understanding are on opposite ends of a scale — and that as one rises, the other falls.
It sounds reasonable. It might even feel true sometimes.
It isn't.
Something quite different happens when you pay close attention to the natural world. The closer you look, the stranger things become. The more you understand, the more there is to be astonished by. Knowledge doesn't close the door on wonder — it opens rooms you didn't know existed.
A murmuration of starlings is beautiful from a distance. Learn that each bird is responding only to its seven nearest neighbours — no conductor, no blueprint, no central intelligence — and the beauty doesn't diminish. It becomes something else entirely. Something closer to disbelief. The elegance of the system is more astonishing than the spectacle of it.
A forest is peaceful. Learn that trees communicate through fungal networks beneath the soil — passing nutrients, sending chemical signals, responding to each other's distress — and the peace takes on a different quality. You are standing in the middle of a conversation that has been going on for centuries without you.
This is what deep attention does to the natural world.
It doesn't resolve the mystery. It compounds it. Every answered question reveals the outline of three more. Every layer of understanding reveals the strangeness of the layer beneath. The natural world, looked at closely enough, is not a collection of solved problems. It is an inexhaustible source of the genuinely, productively unknown.
And that — the genuinely unknown, encountered not from ignorance but from understanding — is where the deepest awe lives.
There is a difference between the awe of not knowing and the awe of beginning to know.
The first arrives easily, to anyone standing at the edge of the ocean for the first time or looking up at a clear night sky. It is real and it is good. But it doesn't always last. Familiarity softens it. The ocean becomes ordinary. The sky becomes wallpaper.
The second kind of awe is harder to reach but more durable. It requires slowing down, paying attention, learning the names of things not to categorise them but to see them more clearly. It grows rather than fades with familiarity. The more time you spend with it, the more it gives back.
This is the awe that artists and scientists share — the particular quality of attention that treats the world as endlessly worth looking at. That finds the ordinary strange and the strange ordinary, and knows that the boundary between the two is mostly a question of how closely you're paying attention.
The invitation is not to study nature. It is simply to look a little longer than feels strictly necessary.
At the thing on the windowsill. The weed coming through the crack in the pavement. The way light moves through a glass of water. Not to name it. Not to explain it. Just to stay with it until it starts to give something back.
It always does.
